- 1Reset and strip the phone. Factory reset, skip the Google account sign-in, insert the data SIM, and confirm mobile data works in a browser.

Does the phone need to be rooted?
No. The proxy app runs as a normal Android app using the system VPN interface, no root, no custom ROM, no warranty-voiding steps. That’s also why old phones work: you don’t need an unlockable bootloader, just a phone that runs a reasonably recent Android.
Does a cracked screen or weak battery matter?
A cracked screen doesn’t matter at all, after setup the phone just sits on a charger. A swollen or very degraded battery is the one hardware issue to take seriously: replace the battery or retire the phone, and never leave a swollen battery plugged in.
Can I still use the phone for other things while it proxies?
Technically yes, practically no. Every app you use adds noise to the connection your customers or tools rely on, and background updates can eat your data plan. Dedicate the phone: factory reset, install the proxy app, turn WiFi off, and let it do one job well.
